The Kuvasz share the same long history with other big
white dogs such as the Slovensky Cuvac, Maremmano-Abruzzese,
Polski Owczarek Podhalanski and the Great Pyrenees. There
are various theories about the orgin of the Kuvasz but we
know that nomadic tribes that settled around the
Carpathian basin
used kuvasz as guard dogs. As
they started to live a more agrarian life, the Kuvasz
assisted the sheperds guarding the sheep as well as the
farms. Compared to other white flock guards there is
evidence showing the kuvasz as more closely tied to families
and even prefering human company.
King Mátyás,
who ruled Hungary from 1458-1490 always had a kuvasz beside
him and Kuvasz puppies were given to noble visitors. Kuvasz
became
a
popular breed and was used as guard dogs and as police dogs.
But the two world wars seriously diminished the Kuvasz
population. A hard work to collect Kuvasz dogs started and a
standard was drawn up and was accepted by the FCI in 1963.
Some years
later, in 1969, Dr
Tibor
Buzády imported the first Kuvasz to Sweden. It was an
Hungarian male: Betyartelepi Bicsak Csigo. Dr Buzády did
also import the bitches
Gyapjus
Rokolya, Pecelói Bojtár Csipke,
Pecelói Cinka
and the males
Budagyöngye
Bihar and Sokorópátkai
Andul from Hungary. He had good contact with Antal Kovacs,
the manager of Gyapjus kennel.
He helped T
Björnsson
to import the bitch, Harosi Ani , sired to Petröczi Atti and
the first Kuvasz litter in Sweden was born in 1970.
But Dr Tibor Buzády
is the first breeder of kuvasz in Sweden with more than one
litter and he started the first club for Hungarian
breeds in Sweden (SvkFUR).
A male from the first litter, Arro, was later used for breeding and is
also the father of Kövi-Dinka, the foundation bitch of
kennel Trevnaden. Through
Kövi-Dinka, Arro is behind the first Swedish World Winner
SV-95 NORDUCH DKUCH INTUCH SV-97-98 WW- 98 Trevnadens
Egészséges and the second Swedish World Winner SUCH Red
Dog´s Czabina. He is also behind NUCH SUCH HUCH Red Dog´s
Czaruso, the first non hungarian Kuvasz to win the Hungarian
Kuvasz special (2008) and the first Swedish Kuvasz to become
Hungarian champion.
Today there is

Allando,

Esbonto Fiu, France (Brave and Beauty 2008)
There are some
more new imports that hasn't yet been used for breeding. In Sweden
almost only dogs free from hip dysplasia have been used for
breeding. Health issues have always been important and we
are happy to say that kuvasz today do not have many health
problems. They also do very well in the show ring. At the
Swedish Kuvasz special 2008, 65 kuvasz participated and our
judge András Kovács was impressed by the quality of the
Swedish dogs. Andras Kovaszc is a son of Antal Kuvasz,
he grew up at the Gyapjus kennel with kuvasz and has a
excellent
reputation as a judge.
One of the reason
behind our high quality of kuvasz in Sweden is due to the good co-operation between the breeders.
The year 2008 kennel Csigora celibrated 10 year as a kuvasz
breeder and so far we
are very proud of our results. Our next litter is a
combination of old swedish lines and new imports. Look for
puppies in the menu!
